And then I remembered exactly where that hamster had gone. Exactly who had eaten it, and where we were now.

From somewhere below we heard a piercing, growling howl. It could only have come from someone cranky as a storm cloud and big as a space yak. Cosmo and I both looked over the side of the tub to see what was making the noise. And there, running on the record as if it were a giant hamster wheel, was none other than—

“Stinky Stu?!” I asked. “Is that really you?”

Stinky Stu, like all hamsters, had absolutely no idea what his name was. Or that we’d ever met. Or, I think, that he was a hamster at all. But one thing was for sure: Stu had changed. And by changed, I mean grown into a giant-bigfoot-mutant-hamster-monster.

We tried to think of a way to get closer and investigate the situation. And we tried our best not to inhale Stu’s nauseating Eau de Hamster parfum.

“Hello, Stuart,” I said. “You seem well. Have you been . . . working out?”

Stu looked up and grimaced. He kept running, and so the record kept playing. The wind seemed determined to push us closer and closer, and I noticed that the closer we got to Stinky Stu, the less he was growling. Maybe he recognized me.
